A La Carte (March 20)

As I was putting together today’s A La Carte collection, I was struck by just how blessed we are to have access to such a large quantity of great material. Today, like so many days, it was difficult to choose only six articles.

Today’s Kindle deals include a collection of options from Christian Focus. You’ll also find a good book by Tim Keller and a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

The One-Hundredth-Day Name: A Story of Becoming

I enjoyed Timarie Friesen’s telling of a sweet story. “She was born a preemie and carried to the corner of the room. There, her father covered her and left her to die. Later, her mother named her. Not immediately though. Historically, a clerk would validate a birth certificate in South Korea only when an infant reached one hundred days old.”

What Does the Bible Say About Satan?

Robb Brunansky collects much of what the Bible says about Satan to provide a profile of every Christian’s enemy. “We face a formidable opponent, and the worst thing we can do is to pretend he doesn’t exist. Rather, we must understand him and his tactics, objectives, and limitations. Beyond that, we must understand what Scripture says about fighting against him.”

Calibrating the Conscience

The human conscience is a tremendous gift of God, but it is one that must be calibrated. Matthew Bingham describes what it takes to calibrate it properly, which is to say, to calibrate it according to God’s Word.

Stop Being Shocked When Christians Disagree With You

Trevin Wax tells us that we need to stop being shocked when we find that Christians disagree with one another. “Faithful men and women who love Christ and his church, who want to see the gospel spread and take root, who remain committed to personal piety, may not see eye to eye on some of the most critical issues of their time.” He offers some searching questions and helpful practices.

Legacy Over Platform: Six Things That Will Outlast Your Sermons

We are not downplaying the importance of preaching when we agree on this: “Long after the sermon manuscript is lost and the recording disappears into the internet archives, what remains is the quiet, everyday realities of pastoral life that shape people far more than we often realize.” Jon Kelly outlines six things that will outlast a pastor’s sermons.

What Can Triumphant Christians Sing?

It was quite a long time ago that Carl Trueman asked What Do Miserable Christians Sing? It was a great question, and you could make the argument that it has been responsible for the creation of some encouraging songs. On a similar note, Jacob now asks what triumphant Christians can sing, for that question is worth considering as well.

Flashback: One of the Most Urgent Biblical Commands for Our Day

All truth is true, but truth can be spoken in ways that are appropriate or inappropriate, fitting or unsuitable, in ways that build up or in ways that tear down. So much depends on circumstance.

Our greatest problem in life isn’t how people treat us, the trials we go through, or the suffering we might endure. Our greatest problem is our sin.
