Reminder: Eric’s Greatest Race is out and available. I hope you’ll consider it for your children, grandchildren, or anyone else who could use an introduction to a Christian hero.
Today’s Kindle deals include some very new books from Crossway. There are some really good picks among them!
Dangers of Theological Controversy
Nick offers some wise words on theological controversy. “We are to be zealous for the defense and propagation of the whole counsel of God for His own glory and the building up of His people. … But, there are also wisdom principles that must accompany a desire to defend the truth. In every battle there is fallout. There are dangers that we need to seek to avoid when entering into theological debate.”
No Confidence? No Problem!
I think most honest parents can identify with Melissa in this: The more we parent, the less confidence we have that we have figured it all out!
The Goodness of Gardening Friends
There is both a literal and a spiritual application in this one. “In Iowa, gardening is not a choice; it’s a fact of life unless you want to be the overgrown neighbor who drives everyone else’s property values down. And so, to love my neighbors and care for my home, I am forced to combat the creeping advance of my new enemy, Charlie, and his weedy minions.”
Why It’s So Difficult to Set Our Minds on Things Above
“Focusing on heaven is more like eating cruciferous vegetables than eating ice cream. It’s better for us. It’s more nourishing. It builds our strength and our resistance to all sorts of infections. But it’s sometimes less attractive than other options competing for our attention and our affection. Apart from the work of God’s Spirit in us, the affections of our hearts and the allure of our environment will constantly set our minds on things on earth.”
Jeff the Low Stakes Prophet (Video)
I generally enjoy the comedy of Lutheran Satire. This short video is pretty clever.
Hurting People
Kristin writes about and for hurting people. “Thoughtless words are taloned creatures, beasts that sink their claws deep, painfully clutching our minds and hearts, a painful reminder that we are frail, easily wounded people, mortal dustlings prone to injuring others with careless speech.”
Flashback: One Measure of Greatness
The humble Christian receives these means of grace as undeserved kindness from God for his growth and joy and perseverance. He never allows himself to think he has so mastered them or so mastered the Christian faith that he is no longer fully and utterly dependent upon such simple, wonderful, ordinary means.
