Weekend A La Carte (December 14)

A La Carte Collection cover image

I am so thankful to Propempo International for sponsoring the blog this week. Propempo is committed to helping churches develop a biblical, local church centered missions ministry.

As usual, there are a few new Kindle deals to look over. Among them is Katie McCoy’s To Be a Woman which has gotten a fair bit of buzz lately.

(Yesterday on the blog: Questions For the Man Who Wants To Marry Your Daughter)

Male and Female Forever?

I think lots of people have wondered this: Will we remain male and female forever, or will heaven bring about some kind of change in our masculinity and femininity?

The Shortcomings of Jordan Peterson

“A defining trait of 20th century biblical scholarship was its shift toward a Christology ‘from below’ rather than ‘from above.’ Theologians began regarding Jesus’ humanity as their preferred methodological starting point rather than his divinity. Some claimed that this approach was truer to the experience of the disciples themselves, who encountered Jesus as a man from Nazareth prior to any reflection on his heavenly origins.” This introduces a major critique of Jordan Peterson’s writing about God.

Busyness, the Thief Who Steals Our Joy

“Whether you’re a soccer mom with a full-time job or a day trader on Wall Street, I know that busyness can easily steal your joy, if you aren’t vigilantly fighting for joy in Christ and striving to glorify him in all that you do.”

Letter to a Progressive Christian: Why You Need to Believe in an Infallible Bible

This writer shows how denying the Bible’s infallibility leads to “a god who only acts in the ways you want him to act, who speaks in the ways you want him to speak, and whose ethical commands match your own ethics. Hard parts of scripture never have to be wrestled with in a way that makes you study more or challenge your preconceived notions. Instead, chunks of scripture can easily be dismissed as uninspired.”

The Weary World Rejoices

This is a sweet and enjoyable Christmas reflection. “Whether you are feeling the weight of personal struggles or are groaning with creation, whether your burden is for your people or other image-bearers around the globe, may the Christmas songs of old bring you a fresh reminder of the truths of Scripture: You can rejoice. You can have hope. There is a Savior, born to you.”

Humble Confidence as Secure Curiosity

“One of my mentors gave me wise advice as I first stepped into my senior pastor role: Lead with humble confidence. Although oxymoronic, the phrase intuitively made sense to me. This is the way of our crucified Savior: strength through restraint and victory through death.”

Flashback: Like a River

Whether you’ve heard of Granger Smith before now or not, and whether you know him as a multi-platinum recording artist or a Greek-memorizing seminary student, I think you’ll be blessed by reading his story.

Your help is in the name of the Lord, not in the name of your favorite Christian hero.
