We are not lacking when it comes to daily devotionals. To the contrary, there are far more options than any of us could read in a lifetime. But not all devotionals are created equal, and it can be difficult to find one that is worthy of a full year’s attention. Here are the ones I recommend. Top Recommendation
This is a devotional I recommend freely and distribute widely. New Morning Mercies has been on our living room book table for years and Everyday Gospel is joining it. It also comes in an edition that integrates the text of the ESV, so that the day’s Bible reading and the day’s devotional sit within the same volume.
Other Recommendations
What one endorser calls “a daily diet of doctrine.” It will help you learn what Christians believe, help you remember what Christians believe, and in that way grow your love for the Lord.
A simple format but a traditional and effective one: confession, a passage of Scripture, a brief devotional, a prayer prompt, a memory verse, and a hymn.
New Morning Mercies
Long a fixture in our home. Though I have not reviewed it, I recommend it without hesitation.
The Valley of Vision
The Valley of Vision. A collection of Puritan prayers and one of the best books of its kind for those who benefit from praying other people’s prayers.
For Family Worship
Forty Christ-centered family devotions from the Psalms, each with a child-friendly translation of the psalm itself. I would have used it in my own family and therefore commend it to yours.
Seasonal
Compiled around the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ. Most will use it around Easter, but I like it best simply as a collection and explanation of some of Christianity’s poetic treasures.
Twenty-five hymns, each with a short devotional and the sheet music. Where would we be without songs to express our sorest griefs and deepest sorrows?
If You’re Just Beginning
A short program that helps beginners learn, grow, and progress until they have established a habit that can be with them for life. It’s just the kind of book I love to recommend.
