A La Carte (11/5)

A question I receive a lot is this one: do you prefer the Kindle or the iPad for electronic reading. That’s a tough question because I flip back and forth. In general, though, I find that I prefer the Kindle. I think it’s because the Kindle’s e-ink technology represents a kind of halfway point between electronic and paper, between new and old. Having said all of that, nine times out of ten, I still prefer to read old-fashioned ink-on-paper books. I guess I’m old school that way.

MacArthur - Yesterday I posted the trailer for John MacArthur’s forthcoming book. If you’d like to trade some information for that book, you can do so since it’s the current free offer from Grace to You. While on the subject of MacArthur, you may enjoy this video in which he lays the smack down on Joel Osteen.

Being Robbed at Gunpoint - I enjoyed this little biographical sketch from Randy Alcorn. He describes a little bit about his background.

Why Sex Ruins TV Romances - Gina Dalfonzo gets a lot right here: “Some modern unwritten rule decrees that couples mustn't marry until the end, or nearly the end, of a TV series, because it would ruin the all-important sexual tension. Yet this doesn't preclude sex. They are allowed and even expected to have plenty of that, with each other and with others.”

SBL Greek New Testament - I don’t know a lot of Greek, but I understand that this is a good new resource. “Logos Bible Software and the Society of Biblical Literature are pleased to announce the release of a new, critically edited Greek New Testament.” It’s freely downloadable.

Life Meant Nothing to Me - This video introduces you to Stacey Smith, a woman rescued by God while in prison. Her story was featured at the True Woman conference.

There can be no hope without faith in Christ, for hope is rooted in him alone. Faith without hope would, by itself, be empty and futile. —Ernst Hoffman

Why Sex Ruins TV Romances” - There are some modern exceptions to this rather unfortunate rule. For example, the “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” show from the 90s managed to have a healthy view of romance between the lead characters. Their relationship was chaste right down to the wedding day, and then the series ran for another whole season with them as newlyweds. The show is remarkably clean, save for one naughty character in the first season who fortunately was banished by the start of the second season.

Tim,

Dr. MacArthur also goes after Joel Osteen’s doctrine pretty hard here in Ligonier’s West Coast Conference last March:http://www.ligonier.org/learn/conferences/christless-christianity-2010-w…

Best,Chris

Here’s the full message with John MacArthur, for those interested:http://www.gty.org/Resources/Sermons/90-397_A-True-Knowledge-of-the-True…

Joel Osteen is sort of a judgement of God on people. It amazes me how blind the blind can be. I do remember when I was just like them, and I know that I am not blind anymore because of the power of the true Gospel and God’s will, and I am eternally thankful to Him for that.

Grace and peace,E.

Stacey Smith gives God glory and her life points to Christ. She’s a friend of mine and if there is any possible way your church can have her give her personal testimony, you all would be beyond blessed.

I do prefer the Kindle. With every backlit display device I’ve tried, my eyes give out after thirty minutes or so. But I can read my Kindle for hours without a problem. And the form factor makes a difference as well—the iPad is just so heavy, and the Kindle so light and easy to hold.

Not having distractions of other apps to play with is a plus as well.

Also, as beautiful as it was to see the faces of the redeemed women as they sign-sang to their Saviour, they could really use some tutoring in sign language. :-)

How about the Kindle vs. the Nook? Seems Nook beat the tar out of Kindle in functionality…

Is there anything like the SBLGNT out there that’s for the OT?

John MacArthur’s comment regarding Joel Osteen’s book, “Your Best Life now”, saying that the only way this life could be your “best life” is if you are going to hell, is the best line I think I’ve heard this year.

I wonder about Joel Osteen - does he really understand what he is doing, or is he just ignorant, like Apollos was before Ananias and Sapphira taught him.

Tammy where does Stacey live? Approximately, that is, of course. I would love to have her at our church in northern Indiana.
