Friday Frivolity

I used to watch far too many episodes of The Simpsons. In fact, I’d be willing to entertain arguments that watching any episodes of The Simpsons is too many, but I digress. Several years ago, after my son began to develop some awareness of what was playing on the television screen I decided that it was probably not an appropriate show for young eyes. And so we turned of The Simpsons and haven’t really watched it since. I don’t miss it in the least.

The other day, though, I began to think about a particular episode. In the middle of this episode a group of concerned citizens knocks on the front door of 742 Evergreen Terrace. Homer opens the door, and upon seeing that the people standing around his doorstep are from the church, groans and says, “This isn’t going to be about Jesus, is it?” It’s not all that funny, really, but it stuck with me. Actually, I think the reason that line has stuck with me is that the audio for that little segment is on a Christian album. Just to make things interesting, I will reach into my big ol’ box of books and send one to the first person to post the name of that band along with the album that includes that clip.

And now I’ll tell you why I thought of that clip. Last Friday night I thought it would be fun to rent a movie for the family to watch. As you well know, it is exceedingly difficult to find a film that the whole family can watch. I suspect we can all think of times when we have allowed our children (and our wives and ourselves) to watch films that we should have turned off. I brought the DVD home from the store and my son, who is nearly six, was immediately excited to see it. He kept asking me what it was. I decided to tease him and refuse to tell him what movie it was. I said, “I don’t think I’ll tell you what it is!” As soon as I said those words his face fell a little bit, he groaned softly and said, “It’s not about God, is it?”

It wasn’t about God. It was about Valiant, an animated pigeon. It was quite a good movie and I was able to watch it guilt-free. And now I am praying for my son’s soul with increased passion!

And speaking of Disney movies, you can watch a trailer for the new Pixar film, Cars here. Pixar is still the top of the heap when it comes to computer animation. And thankfully they tend to keep things cleaner than some other studios (was anyone else shocked by all the innuendo in Shrek?).

Anyways, because we are moving next month, we have streams of people coming through the house this weekend to see if they’d like to rent it once we have left. So there will be no movies tonight. This moving thing has turned out to have some benefits. Because we paid our landlord first and last month’s rent when we moved in five years ago we have no rent to pay in March. Our first mortgage payment is not due until May, so we’re rent/mortgage free for two months. I don’t know what we’ll do with this windfall!

And that’s it for me. I have some book reviews I hope to write and perhaps post over the weekend. Beyond that I am hoping for a peaceful, restful weekend. What more could a guy want?

It is hard to know how much to lean on the kids when they say something like your son said. It is the honest outpouring of their heart, after all; I can’t imagine that it’s the most wonderful thing in the world to them when you sit through a documentary DVD to review it.

My kids have a horror of what they call “talking CDs” — that is, the CDs that are burned from MP3s I downloaded from AOMin or John Piper or whoever, to listen to them in the car. In fact sometimes the attitude displayed toward them is downright nasty. It is tough to find the place where it crosses the line from disappointment that it won’t be fun for them, to disgust because they feel entitled to be entertained by such things. And sometimes I have responded fairly harshly, or lectured on how it was through such “talking CDs” that the Lord saw fit to regenerate me or teach us how to live or draw us to the church we now attend (which they love).

But ultimately it comes down to, as you said, praying for them with increased passion. I long for the day when my children are as delighted with the unfolding of God’s Word as I am — and for the day when I no longer have the same reaction as they do sometimes, and think “I’m tired of preaching, I’m going to go rent a movie or turn on the TV.”

It’s good to know that we are not alone. Thanks for this post. May have been frivolous for you but it was encouraging to me.

Charles - My son is actual not too bad when it comes to watch those DVDs I watch for review purposes. He especially enjoys the ones about Creation (mostly when they deal with cool animals).

But you’re right - a situation like this leads me to long after the time I trust is coming when he will be delighted in the unfolding of the Word!

It’s not about God, is it?” Yikes!!!

That is a scary warning sign. I have a 7 year old boy and I definitely want to help him develop a love for the Lord and His word.

On another note, Pixar was just bought out by Disney for a few billion dollars so expect the purity of their movies to take a dramatic nose dive.

SNAPPY

That’s the one. That’s my favorite Hokus Pick album. I promoted several of their shows during that and the Snappy tour. Good stuff.

Van - Send me an email and I’ll send you a list of books you can choose from!

It’s not about God is it?” says volumes more about the quality of “Christian Films” than it does about your sons heart. How many Christian films can you think of that you came away from saying “WOW now that is what film is all about - everyone should see this!” And conversely how many more have you found yourself wincing all the way through. :)

Just my two cents.

was anyone else shocked by all the innuendo in Shrek?”

I haven’t seen the movie(s) but I have read the “screen-it” review. And that was shocking!! I couldn’t believe it. Maybe it’s a little more in your face to read all of the “bad stuff” in a large clump like that as opposed to watching a movie where the sexual innuendo is evenly dispersed. As if spreading it out over time is better than getting it all at once…silly.

What’s been even more shocking has been to hear other Christians defend the movie. My wife and I have never told anyone they shouldn’t see the movie (we don’t think you should…but we’d never take it upon ourselves to tell you you shouldn’t). Yet, if someone asks us about it (we’ve got kids so we’ve been asked quite a bit if our children have seen it) we tell them “no we haven’t seen it and won’t see it because we think the sexual humor is just plain wrong”. And then the shock they should experience while watching the movie is actually shown by them when they retort…”Whats the big deal…it’s a kids movie for goodness sake!”

We think “kids movies” she be a bit more pure for the sake of goodness, thank you very much…

Tim,

I don’t know if I’d be as concerned about your son woundering if the Movie was about God as much as I’d be worried if he started complaining about the Family Bible study or going to church, etc…

Of course that doesn’t make there should be slackness in praying for him :) I’m an excellent example of fruit from my dad’s fervent prayers.

Have a good one.-Frank
