The Valley of Vision

Many weekends I like to post a prayer from that collection of Puritan prayers called The Valley of Vision. I do this because I need to learn to pray and because I know there is much I can learn from this book. Though it is not an instruction manual, there is a sense in which is serves in just that way. Most of us (perhaps all of us) learn to pray by imitating others. And the people who prayed these prayers and recorded them for us are worthy of imitation. These are not prayers to be read as if just reading the words has any power or worth; they are prayers to be prayed as if they were your own words. As you speak them, offering them to God, they become just that.
This is the prayer that gave its name to the book. It is called “The Valley of Vision.”
Lord, High and Holy, Meek and Lowly,
Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.
Let me learn by paradox
that the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is the healed heart,
that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
that to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
that to give is to receive,
that the valley is the place of vision.
Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,
and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
thy life in my death,
thy joy in my sorrow,
thy grace in my sin,
thy riches in my poverty,
thy glory in my valley.

Thank you
i think it’s significant that this particular prayer is the only one (as far as i know) written in the 20th century, by a non-Puritan. it was written by the editor, in imitation of the prayers he had lovingly compiled and edited on the pages to follow. which, i think, proves your point nicely. :]
Yes, indeed.
Thanks, I needed this reminder today.
one of my favorite in this book… thanks Tim…
Hi Tim
Thanks, this is a great book and my wife and I love using it. But this may seem off the point but I thought I would mention it. I maintain our Church bookstall and always keep this book in stock and I sell a few but I am sure more people would buy if it had a better cover. It has had the same ( ugly) cover since first printed in 1975 and it has been reprinted every 3-4 years since.
This is great. Thank you so much. This will be read at my church this morning!
I love the cover; probably because it hasn’t changed and we read to our kids from the same-looking one my parents read to us from.
Maybe Fathead will make a VOV skin for you :)
I have this book and have found it outstanding! I also posted a prayer from it on my blog some months ago, as well!
My SIL gave me this book several years ago, and it became one of my favorites. No matter what my state of mind, I can find a prayer that offers comfort or joy (in knowing that others have felt the same way as myself) and helps me articulate my feelings to God.
