A La Carte (August 7)

A La Carte Collection cover image

Someone recently asked what parenting book I recommend. If I could hand people just one, it would probably be Purposeful and Persistent Parenting, which has a good balance of truth and technique. Highly recommended!

Today’s Kindle deals include Matt Fuller’s excellent Reclaiming Masculinity, Tony Merida’s Love Your Church, and much more.

As Gen Z Turns to the Occult, How Should We Respond?

It is a surprising phenomenon that many Gen Zers seem to be turning to the occult. This article explains how we may respond.

Taking Phone Addiction Seriously

“We all joke about being addicted to our phones. If we’re honest with ourselves, many of us simply don’t like how much we use our phones. We know it’s a problem, but we don’t know what to do about it. And it just seems so normal now.” This should prove convicting as you read it.

The Picture on the Nightstand

“When a marriage is strong, it is a fortress. It shields what is fragile. Spouses are safe. Children thrive. Its strength creates overflowing benefit into entire communities. When a spouse breaks the marriage covenant, the impact is brutal. It exploits vulnerability. Spouses bleed. Children bear the weight. And the effects ripple outward.”

A Tongue for Every Tribe

This is a long and interesting article on the ways the English language is serving and will continue to serve the global church. “Translating Scripture and other books into mother tongues remains necessary, but alongside that crucial work, English-speaking Christians would do well to consider how they might leverage their tongue for every tribe.”

The Woman Caught in Adultery

What should we do with the story from the book of John where a woman gets caught in her adultery? Denny Burk looks at the complexity of the situation and suggests some ways forward.

The Wind Blows Where It Will

“We cannot see the wind, but we can see its effects. There is visual evidence of leaves rustling or dust flying in the air. Just as with the wind, we cannot see the Spirit, but we have the effects of the Spirit’s regeneration.” There’s a reason this metaphor is so powerful!

Flashback: When Should You Stop Praying?

We serve a God who commands us to bring our petitions before him…He commands us to pray without timidity, to pray without ceasing, and to pray without losing hope.

Worry, like a rocking chair, will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.

What Does It Mean to Be Discerning?

Though I have heard it said of others, I have never had anyone tell me that I am a man of discerning tastes. I do not have a discerning palate or a discerning sense of style. I can, however, contentedly live without these if only I can have a discerning mind and a discerning spirit.

You May Not Need Nearly as Much House as You Think You Do

Our house is emptier than it has ever been, and that makes it feel bigger than it has ever been. It’s funny how the home that often felt just a little too small for the five of us now feels just a little too big for the two of us. Even a little house can…
