A La Carte (February 27)

A La Carte Friday 2

For just the second time in my life, I have had to back out of a speaking engagement at the last minute. I apologize to those in the Cleveland area whom I will not be seeing this week! A virus got hold of me and, though it’s ebbing, I’m still not able to travel.

Today’s Kindle deals include lots of good options, like a study Bible and a timely book by Al Mohler.

Time

Paul Levy writes about the reality of time. “When you were little do you remember that feeling of wanting time to speed up?  Now in middle age with my children the age they are, I want time to slow down. I am told that in old age people want to wind the clock back. None of those things are possible. We are not in control of time,  and so it is vital in life to understand how we must live in the time we’ve been given.”

More Than a Book

Pierce Taylor Hibbs celebrates God’s Word. “Living. Active. Working. Cutting. Exposing. That’s the word of God. It’s on a whole other level from ocean plankton, and it’s on a whole other level from every human book, too. We might even say that the word of God is ‘unparalleled spiritual ocean plankton.’ I don’t think that phrase will be trending any time soon, but it gets at the point: Scripture is a living and active organism that gets inside of us and works.”

Truth Comes First

If You Knew Him, You Would Ask

“Most Christians I know have little trouble affirming God’s power. We believe he can answer prayer. We confess his omnipotence. We trust his ability. What we struggle with more is God’s disposition toward us. Does God want to respond? Does he delight to hear from us? Is his heart inclined toward generosity or stinginess?”

The Multitasking Myth

I think most of us already know that multitasking is a myth. In this article, Reagan explains why, even if we know that, the urge to multitask should serve as a kind of warning bell.

Beware AI-Generated Christian Content

Yes, AI-generated content is being churned out in massive quantities, so we need to be more discerning than ever when it comes to what we read. “Right now we have individuals/companies churning out AI products and trying to make them look like they are written by real people. Nothing about them explicitly says they are AI-generated, but everything about them implicitly screams that they are AI-generated.”

It’s Sad that You Believe That

“One of the most significant aspects of this season of parenting is engaging with our teens as they start to question everything they believe. What we simplistically think of as teen rebellion is a process of trying to discern whether their beliefs are innate or inherited, and anything that is determined to be inherited is then submitted to a ruthless sifting. As teens process their beliefs, each one is systematically put through a thorough threshing and I’m afraid that most of what was imparted to them by a parent will likely be considered chaff.”

Flashback: God Doesn’t Need You To Do His PR

This relationship between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility is difficult to understand. In fact, it may well be impossible to fully understand, at least on this side of eternity. And so we take it by faith as the clear testimony of God’s Word.

We talk about taking up the cross and following Jesus, but that cross is not half so heavy as the burden which the sinner carries. It is a very solemn thing to be a Christian, but it is a more solemn thing not to be a Christian.

Random Thoughts and Tips on Prayer

Not every thought makes a good article and sometimes an entire article can be distilled down to a single thought. For those reasons, I like to occasionally create what I have created here–a roundup of brief, random thoughts. In this case, these thoughts are on prayer.
