A La Carte (November 5)

A La Carte Collection cover image

Today’s Kindle deals include Richard Gamble’s huge three-volume series. There is also one of the NSBT volumes on sale and a pretty good list of general market deals.

Also, while I don’t pay much attention to deals that aren’t related to books, I noticed that many M3 MacBook Pros are deeply discounted at Amazon now—up to several hundred dollars off.

Why Women Use Pornography and How the Church Can Help

Helen Thorne-Allenson: “In years past, conversations about pornography were often considered a male preserve. If a book was written, a talk given, or a Bible study application offered, it usually had men in view. There was a consensus that women wouldn’t be drawn to online porn—maybe to a few romantic novels but nothing more explicit than that. Recent years, however, have brought a greater understanding that both men and women struggle in this area.”

I Want God’s Wrath on My Enemy

John Piper responds to a Christian who asks a difficult question. “Pastor John, how do I pray for my enemies who have abused me, taken advantage of me, and left me homeless and bankrupt? I want revenge and God’s wrath to overcome them right now. Help me find my balance in Christ.”

The Third Wave of Biblical Counseling

Here’s a call for the third wave of biblical counseling to be one that is especially concerned with the priesthood of believers and preventative care. “I believe that as we continue to empower the priesthood of all believers and focus on preventative care, we will see healthier, more resilient churches—communities where people and leaders are not just surviving but thriving in their walk with the Lord.”

Flashback: Rejoice in the Wife of Your Youth (and Not-So-Youth)

Aileen is the wife of my youth, though neither of us can claim to be as youthful as we once were. So how does a no-longer-youthful man heed this?

God can pick sense out of a confused prayer.

  • When God Plants an Acorn

When God Plants an Acorn, He Means an Oak

We stood together on the crest of a hill, a gentle breeze rustling the meadow around our feet. The fields ran gently downward until they met a creek that gurgled happily in its course. A few years prior, an acorn had somehow made its way to the highest point of this hill, carelessly dropped there…
