A La Carte (October 8)

A La Carte Collection cover image

Today is the final day for Amazon’s huge sale that includes hundreds of interesting books and a whole lot more. I think the commentary deals are especially noteworthy. You’ll find deals on many volumes of the ZECNT, a few from the Pillar series, and various others. (Also, if you’re into board games, a few are on sale: Ticket to Ride; First Journey; 7 Wonders; Azul; CATAN; Carcassonne; Don’t Rock the Boat.)

Today’s Kindle deals include several books that I haven’t seen on sale before, including a pair of important titles about missions. Update: Amazon came through with a massive batch of great deals on academic titles and commentaries.

Watch Your Language

Hopefully you still have an available article at WORLD so you can read this excellent one about nasty words. “Nasty language is a black-magic wand. When you touch it to a person, place or thing, you perform an act of mild (and sometimes not so mild) denigration. When you use everyone’s favorite vulgar word to denote the sexual act, you reduce the act. You gut the spirit life out of it. With profanity, you denigrate what you feel is overvalued. You try to cut it down to size. … When you curse compulsively you produce a view of the world that’s smaller and meaner.”

Are We Tired of the Ordinary?

We have heard lots of talk lately about the possibility of some kind of revival. On that note, “Only time will tell as to whether a genuine revival is happening or another chapter in revivalism is being written. I am concerned though that many believe that some cultural or political moment where power is seized equals revival.” For that reason, we need to be careful to understand what makes a true revival.

The Lord Is My Shepherd: Why God Made Sheep

“God filled his world with props — with trees and eagles and mountains and fish and men — to reveal not just his creativity and power, but himself.” And God made sheep to display something as well.

Her View From the Pew: Reflections From a Pastor’s Wife

Katie Polksi writes for the pastor’s wife. “Your presence matters, your partnership is invaluable, your prayers are powerful, and your faithfulness is formative. There is nothing you do in serving Jesus that is a waste of time or effort (1 Cor.15:58), no matter how small the service might seem.”

Who Am I to Question My Captain’s Orders?

I think many people will be able to identify with Ryanne’s struggles with comparison and envy. “I will march on. I will keep my eyes locked on my mission, rather than looking skeptically at the missions of others. I will keep stewarding the work and ministries that I’ve been given. Through it all, I will keep thanking God that He is the one leading the charge.”

What I Want to Leave My Family When I Die

Phil tells his family what he intends to leave to them when he dies. “In light of the reality of death pressed upon us by events this year, and the passing of men of God who have impacted our lives—men we have known and in some cases had close relationships with—I have been thinking ahead to the day when you may hear that I have finished my earthly race.”

Flashback: The Cost of Surrounding Yourself with Negative People

Jesus deliberately surrounded himself with people who were less than him, who were more negative than him, who did nothing to help him soar like an eagle, who offered him no path to self-improvement. Why? Because he loved them!

The whole field of providential history is covered with answered prayers as thickly as bright-eyed daisies cover our Western prairies.

An Ideal Resource For Your Family Devotions

There is a lot I miss from the days when our children were young. High on the list is family devotions. Nick once described our family as having a “Spartan-like commitment” to them, though I remember as much failure as success and as many misses as hits. Still, there’s no doubt that over the 26…

  • Conform

You Can Conform to Christ Even if You Don’t Conform to Me

One of the aspects of the Christian faith that I find particularly perplexing is the freedom God gives his people to obey him in different or even opposite ways, so that one person’s obedience is another person’s disobedience. Even as two people take the same action, one might be obeying him and the other disobeying…
