A La Carte (September 8)

Good morning. Grace and peace to you.

Today’s Kindle deals include some excellent books meant to help you better understand the Trinity. Sanders’ The Deep Things of God is superb, as is Beholding the Triune God. Mark Ward’s Authorized is specifically about KJV-onlyism but touches on many other interesting subjects. (Apologies—the prices on those Trinity books did not drop; I’ll try to find out why.)

Are We the Idols?

We are familiar with the idea of pursuing idols, but is it possible that we ourselves are the idols? “In an old British comedy sketch, a German soldier turns to another and asks, ‘Are we the baddies?’ While humorous, the underlying situation is weighty and near. Might we, without knowing it, be on the side of evil rather than good?”

The Power of Prayer Meetings

“I am not sure we are fully aware of the constant temptation to rely on ourselves. In many ways, it is the great battle of the Christian life. It’s a constant battle to remind ourselves day by day to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. I find myself believing the lie that I can do it if I only try hard enough or summon up enough willpower.”

Is Being Pro-Life Really Just “Pro-Forced Birth”?

Those who hold to a pro-life position are often accused of being “pro-forced birth?” But is this in any way accurate? “When it comes to moral issues, like abortion, we must always be alert for the word games, rhetorical ploys, and manipulative language that distort the truth and make something evil look good.”

Raising the Next Generation to Know and Worship God

“The Bible makes it clear that teaching the next generation to worship God is not optional, but essential. Our worship and obedience to God isn’t just a personal relationship, it’s generational.”

You Can Be Deep in History and Remain Baptist

Contrary to some claims, Wyatt explains why it’s possible to be deep into church history and still remain confidently Baptist.

A Distorted View of Lobola Undermines Marriage and Family

This article from TGC Africa is both informative and helpful, perhaps especially for those who are serving in multicultural contexts.

Flashback: What’s the Purpose of … Marriage?

The highest purpose of marriage is to display to the world the sacrificial love of Christ for his bride, the church.

When men fall it is through their own weakness. When they stand firm it is God’s imparted strength.
