Meet 52 Unsung Heroes

Throughout history, the stories of brave Black believers and their remarkable contributions to the Christian faith and our nation have too often gone overlooked. Passionate writer and educator Jasmine L. Holmes brings 52 notable Black Christians’ stories to life in this fun, fact-filled book for middle-grade readers.

Kids will discover the stories of:

Amanda Berry Smith—the evangelist and orphanage founder who overcame poverty and hardship to preach the Word of God worldwide.

George Liele—the missionary who went from indentured servant to ordained minister.

Mary Ann Shadd—the journalist and teacher who spoke truth to power as a fervent abolitionist and an outspoken advocate for women’s voting rights.

Well-researched and colorfully illustrated, Strong and Fearless Faith will inspire young readers from all backgrounds to express their faith in bold ways.

The Heart Behind the Message

“My intention for this book is to introduce young readers to the names of untold heroes of the Christian faith. So often, Christian collections and anthologies offer one or two Black believers for young people to look up to. This one will offer fifty-two short biographies and introductions.

The biographies center around Civil War and Reconstruction era Black lives, as, again, many anthologies tend towards Civil Rights-era heroes and heroines.

My hope for this book is that young readers will…

  • be introduced to a wide array of new stories.
  • see God’s faithfulness in the lives of these men and women.
  • begin to grasp the depth and breadth of the robust fight for their humanity that Black Americans launched.

I am a firm believer in the power of storytelling to illustrate difficult truths, and I hope to illustrate those truths through these stories. Young people will be as mesmerized by these stories as I am.”

—Jasmine Holmes, author of Strong and Fearless Faith

Amplify Not a Fool by Responding to His Folly

Where you think your wisdom may make the fool better, it’s more likely that his folly will make you worse. You are more likely to stoop to his level than he is to rise to yours. Ironically, fools can be clever at times and wise men naive, for the fool has an intuitive understanding of…

  • No Cotton Candy Fairy Tale

If you’ve read or listened to the news lately, you’ve probably heard much about the persecution of Christians across the world. Dozens and hundreds and thousands suffer and sacrifice for the sake of their faith every day. But a fair number of these sufferers weren’t born into Bible-believing households and families. What are their stories?…
