You Are the Light!

You Are the Light

A book I’ve come to much enjoy is Piercing Heaven, which shares favorite prayers from the Puritans (and a few others). Many of the prayers are ones I’ve been able to pray myself. This example comes from the pen of Robert Hawker.

Precious Jesus, you are the Source, the Fountain, the Author, the Finisher of all.

“Oh the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are your judgments, and your ways past finding out.”

What was the day, the ever-blessed, ever-to-be-remembered day, when you—who commanded the light to shine out of darkness—shone in upon my heart?

And when did Jesus, the day-dawn and the day-star, arise to give us “the light of the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, in the face of Jesus Christ?”

Glorious light and life of my soul! Continue your sweet influence, morning by morning, at dawn, and during the evening star of your grace. Continue until, after many wintry days of my blindness, ignorance, and senseless state, you renew me in the precious discoveries of your love.

By this I am carried through all the twilight of this poor dying state of things below. For then I will awake to the full enjoyment of you in glory. I will see you in one full, open day; and I will be made like you in your kingdom of light, and life, and happiness, forever and ever. Amen.

    The Path to Contentment

I wonder if you have ever considered that the solution to discontentment almost always seems to be more. If I only had more money I would be content. If I only had more followers, more possessions, more beauty, then at last I would consider myself successful. If only my house was bigger, my influence wider,…

Part of the joy of reading biography is having the opportunity to learn about a person who lived before us. An exceptional biography makes us feel as if we have actually come to know its subject, so that we rejoice in that person’s triumphs, grieve over his failures, and weep at his death.
