Emily’s Story
“Juanita and Terry Stauffer of Edson, Alberta, whose teenaged daughter Emily was murdered a year and a half ago, were interviewed by a reporter from 100 Huntley Street, a Canadian Christian TV program. In these two videos, they share how God prepared them for their loss and continues to uphold them day by day.” (Last year I interviewed Terry)
Uncool People Need Jesus Too
Bill Streger pens a thought-provoking article. “Through my work with the Acts 29 Network, I get the privilege of assessing a number of potential church planters each year. I also get to hear about dozens more from fellow pastors as well. When I guy comes in to get assessed, by the time he gets to the interview stage he's already submitted a lot of paperwork. Resumes. Plans. Budgets. Demographic Analysis. Dental history. (Ok, just kidding on the last one). And as I've looked at some amazing plans from church planters, I've started to notice a trend. They all sound the same.”
Fourteen
Ali gives a glimpse of life on a hospital ship.”Among the things that slipped through the cracks from the admissions process was a pregnancy test on the little fourteen year-old girl in Bed Seventeen. Since everyone was pitching in and helping out, her nurse sent off the sample to the lab this morning, expecting to be able to call the OR and get her scheduled for surgery to straighten her leg when the results came back.”
A Compendium of Beautiful Libraries
Check out this gallery of beautiful libraries. “Everyone has some kind of place that makes them feel transported to a magical realm. For some people it's castles with their noble history and crumbling towers. For others it's abandoned factories, ivy choked, a sense of foreboding around every corner. For us here at Curious Expeditions, there has always been something about libraries. Row after row, shelf after shelf, there is nothing more magical than a beautiful old library.”

There’s heap big conversation at the Bill Streger “Uncool People” post. Looks like he’s shut the comments down and is going to clarify some things he said. That could be today.
I think Bill Streger has hit a home run in his assessment of what I see as a very unhealthy and counter gospel strategy. Lets face the facts as I look who attend conferences , attend the urban type of churches that Driscoll and Keller pastor , they are upper white middle class or better . The Starbucks of the christian faith . Even in my home church , I see a upper middle class structure that really relates little to the poor and disenfranchised. My Dad, who is not a believer , is not in their demographic group. He is a pensioner , only a grade 8 education , laborer, who speaks plainly and is poor by most of my churches retirees standards with their cottages , good pensions, trips etc… I find it interesting Jesus came preaching to the poor , the marginalized and unwanted . But then again if those people are to where your message is going , how will you get your money for your fancy churches and campus , internet cafes. Isn’t it cooler to build a church with Joe , the urbanite with a ton of degrees , who sips lattes and doesn’t pronounce words wrong . I know I’m stereotyping a bit but I see this in my local area and it sickens me .
haha. thanks for the “Free Will” best part of this A la Carte….
I will actually read the other stuff later on.
I’ve added a follow up post that clarifies what I was actually trying to say. Please go and read: http://billstreger.com/?p=1090
I love that I read the “free will” comic in a neuroscience class.

Why has no one noticed that my generation (I am 36) is for the most part unsaved? Why not laud what the Starbucksification (such as it exists- you’re right that you are generalizing and over-simplifying when you claim this) has done, if it is bringing people in contact with the gospel? Add your own trappings to attract another set, but why ask this generation to learn a set of historical church traditions (Khakis and the Continentals, anyone)?
It seems to me so many critics walk into a church and if they see people in jeans and hear “rock” music, something in their mind turns to mush and they are unable to rejoice that the people to whom these things appeal are IN A CHURCH. Of course we should be discerning about the message, but I cannot for the life of me understand all this energy spent taking apart the curtains.
One last thought- in a world of split-second trends and viral culture, it seems a move wise as a serpents to use all the tools we have to reach those who reach the world. Isn’t that really what these planters are looking to do?
“Why has no one noticed that my generation (I am 36) is for the most part unsaved?”
How does that make your generation different from any other?
