Merry Christmas

We were up at 7 this morning to get our Christmas started with stockings and gifts and a special breakfast and other family traditions. And a few hours later I’m sitting here at my computer, running back through Christmas posts from years past to see what I was doing on Christmas in 2009, 2008, 2007—I can go all the way back to 2003. Some years we’ve been at home while other years we’ve been celebrating an Atlanta or Chattanooga Christmas. No two years have quite been the same.

This year we are at home, though a little bit later on we’ll be driving to my in-laws place and doing a Christmas dinner there (roast lamb, if I heard it right). And that will be that—a fun, quiet, traditional family Christmas. I love it.

I find myself thinking this morning about the miracle of Emmanuel, the miracle of God being with us. It’s a shame that we could ever get used to such a thing—to something as amazing as God being with us, God coming to earth in human form. It’s an idea I don’t ever want to get so used to that it begins to lose its wonder.

And as I sit here I am listening to Sojurn sing this song, “God Is With Us.”

The glory of God has come to the earth,
The glory of God in our Savior's birth,
Join with the angels to sing and proclaim
Glory to His name

Emmanuel, Emmanuel, God is with us
Emmanuel, Emmanuel, God is with us now.

Eternity's likeness has come into time,
A light in the darkness, now hope is alive,
Down from the heavens on this holy night,
Our God in a manger, our God as a child.

Emmanuel, Emmanuel, God is with us
Emmanuel, Emmanuel, God is with us now.

Oh, let us bring Him more than our silver and gold...

Genuine question, from the other side of the globe: doesn’t ‘go to church’ fit in there somewhere?

Hey Anthony, I won’t answer for Tim, but the culture in the Southern US (not where Tim is from) is to generally avoid church services on Christmas day to allow for family gatherings; often churches will have Christmas Eve services - a favorite of mine is when my church takes candles out of the church at the conclusion and lights them all on the front lawn and sings a hymn/carol together. When Christmas falls on a Sunday, my church generally either holds no services or only holds one abbreviated service (instead of the normal morning and evening plus small groups).

Merry Christmas Tim! Love that song.

Also, a thousand thanks for the link you posted a couple weeks back about the discounted R/C helicopters on Amazon. My nine y.o. daughter had been saving for one of the extortion-priced one at the mall, so when I saw the link here, I grabbed it. We had one of those patented “eyes huge/screaming/jumping” Christmas moments parents hope for., and she’s hardly stopped playing with it, and it really is well made and a bunch of fun. So, thanks!

And Anthony, when I read your question I chuckled and thought “He must be from Australia.” ;) I am too, and I vividly remember sitting through what felt like a seven-hour service each Christmas morning! (And zero chance of convincing my parents to skip it, given that my Dad was the pastor. :) ) Now as a mom, I’m personally really thankful that most Americans do church on Christmas Eve. What with all the wrapping/cooking/setting up most moms are doing late into the night after the already impossibly-wound-up kids finally fall asleep, as much as I love the Lord and delight in the significance of the day, I don’t think I’d have the energy to get the family clothed and back to church on top of everything else. :)

I love it.”-Tim

Me too.

Although it’s almost over, a Merry Christmas season to you Tim,and your family as well. You’re a faithful wirness to our Savior, and your light is shining so that our Father in heaven is glorified.

O come, O come, Emmanuel,And ransom captive Israel,That mourns in lonely exile hereUntil the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice!Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Desire of nations, bindIn one the hearts of all mankind;Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,And be Thyself our King of Peace.”

This is the verse that i have on my heart this Christmas.

Genuine question, from the other side of the globe: doesn’t ‘go to church’ fit in there somewhere?

My church (in the US) has Christmas Eve services only, beginning on the eve of Christmas Eve. Today, Sunday, we’re back on our normal schedule. I predict that few people will show up.

To my knowledge, our president didn’t fit in “go to church” at Christmas again this year.

Tim, Thank you for the attention you gave to Unbroken. It was gifted to me yesterday morning and I finished it after church today. As you’re the only person I know who has also read it (as of now), to your knowledge was it a common practice to copyright sermons like the Billy Graham sermons footnoted in the book?

Thanks and Merry Christmas. Happy reading in 2011.
