Books I Recommend: Leadership

Few things challenge us more than leadership, especially the kind of servant-hearted leadership the Bible calls for. Here are books I recommend on the subject of leadership.

Top Recommendation

The Conviction to Lead by Al Mohler. (Second edition now available)

I have read all of Mohler’s books and I am convinced that this is his best. Each of his previous books has been helpful in its own way, but they have generally been repurposed sermons or blog posts and have carried the weight of mixed media. The Conviction to Lead has all the marks of an original work, oozing with wisdom and dripping with passion. This is Mohler in his most natural habitat, doing what he does best. If you are a pastor or elder, if you are an owner or CEO, if you are in any form of leadership, I am convinced that this book will transform the way you lead. I highly recommend that you read it.

Other Recommendations

  • The Book on Leadership by John MacArthur. Now we can say, “John MacArthur wrote the book on leadership…”
  • Faithful Leaders by Rico Tice. This is a brief guidebook to the kind of faithful ministry that so many aspire to and so many achieve.
  • Serving Without Sinking by John Hindley. This is one for anyone who serves, but may be especially applicable to leaders.
  • Powerful Leaders? by Marcus Honeysett. Honeysett’s book is meant to call leaders to evaluate their leadership to ensure they are not misusing their power.
  • Bully Pulpit by Michael Kruger. Kruger specifically focuses on the issue of spiritual abuse—how to identify it and how to avoid it.
