A La Carte (May 2)

A La Carte Friday 2

Today’s Kindle deals include some excellent choices like R.C. Sproul’s Chosen By God and J.I. Packer’s Concise Theology, which I’ve never seen on sale before. I added a lot of general market deals to yesterday’s list (e.g. Meacham’s American Lion) in case you want to scroll down a bit. Finally, some of yesterday’s deals were slow to see the price drop; they have all changed now.

Here are a few excellent deals on print editions of books: Jackie Hill Perry’s Upon Waking and the first volume of Stephen Wellum’s Systematic Theology are both deeply discounted. Also consider the multi-authored The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown.

Porn Shaped Gen Z Men. The Bible Can Too.

There is a hopeful note to this article which covers the overwhelming prevalence of porn among young men. “I asked my small group a follow-up question: ‘If 10 minutes of watching porn per day has shaped your brain, what do you think 10 minutes in the Bible could do?’ While it wasn’t the mic-drop moment I imagined, a flicker of hope shone on their faces as they began to consider the surprising reality. Porn shaped us. But the Bible can shape us even more forcefully.”

When God Speaks

Greg Koukl shares some helpful work on the ways God communicates. “According to many notable—and indisputably godly—Christian leaders, developing this interpersonal element of ‘hearing’ God is not only vital to our intimacy with him, but it’s also a critical component of our ability to make sound decisions regarding God’s will for our lives. Indeed, they say, from God’s side, the personal communication lines are wide open to every believer. If we are not hearing God’s voice, it’s not because God isn’t trying; he is. We just aren’t listening properly. God is not the problem; we are.”

The Devil Hates Context. Use It.

“The father of lies is always working. He doesn’t get tired, sleep, or experience any level of fatigue. When we are worn down, the devil is at his best. When our minds are groggy, his is crisp. We fill our minds with Scripture—the sword of truth—to fight against the schemes of Satan. And it’s shocking that he uses Scripture too.”

The Sacred Honor of Being a Witness to Suffering

Melissa says rightly that witnessing suffering can be a sacred honor. “There is a solidarity that develops when we are willing to stand as witnesses for the grieving, for the hurting, the dying, the pain-riddled, the crushed. We can be there as monument builders in some very dark moments, witnesses to what God does through the suffering.”

A Strange Aversion to White Guy Monologues

This article addresses a common misconception about “white guy monologues.”

Biblical Ministry?

Peter Mead explains what a biblical ministry is and is not.

Flashback: Like a Ruined Castle

“The human heart retains a distorted copy, a smudged image of God’s original will…Like a ruined castle it is still possible to discern the glory for which we were created.”

Think as little of yourself as you want to, but always remember that our Lord Jesus Christ thought very highly of you—enough to give himself for you in death and sacrifice.

What Does It Mean to Be Discerning?

Though I have heard it said of others, I have never had anyone tell me that I am a man of discerning tastes. I do not have a discerning palate or a discerning sense of style. I can, however, contentedly live without these if only I can have a discerning mind and a discerning spirit.

You May Not Need Nearly as Much House as You Think You Do

Our house is emptier than it has ever been, and that makes it feel bigger than it has ever been. It’s funny how the home that often felt just a little too small for the five of us now feels just a little too big for the two of us. Even a little house can…
