    Call to Worship

“‘What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it, a metal image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols! Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to a silent stone, Arise! Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it. But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.’” (Habakkuk 2:18–20)

This call to worship the one true God comes from Habakkuk 2. Let's obey God's call and take a moment to "keep silence before Him."

    Confession of Sin

At the end of the longest Psalm in the Bible, a Psalm about the Bible, David writes:

“I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.” (Psalm 119:176)

How did he go astray? He must have not done what he recommended near the start of this Psalm.

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:9–11)

When we do not walk in the Word, by the Word, according to His Word — we go astray. Let's confess our waywardness and wordlessness to our God.

    Assurance of Pardon

He whom John called, "the Word of God" – Jesus Christ our Saviour – said this of himself:

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." If you have confessed your sins and are believing on Christ, be assured, dear brother or sister, that Christ has paid the penalty for your neglect and disobedience of His Word. As he said to one woman, so he says to all of us now: "Go, and sin no more."

    Corporate Reading

(This is a two-part reading. You read WITH congregation 15-20, then you read alone 21-23 as a kind of response to the congregation.) Please read out loud with me Colossians 1:15–20

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” (Colossians 1:15–20)

Listen to the Word of God

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:2–5)

“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24–26)
