Psalm 98:1–4

“Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!” (Psalm 98:1–4)

This call to worship God comes from Psalm 98. And all people are to do the joyous work of worship because God has done the marvellous work of salvation. So let’s sing to our God who remembers all of his promises and saves, helps and keeps all of his people.

Isaiah 31:1, 6–7

“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the LORD!”

“Turn to him from whom people have deeply revolted, O children of Israel. For in that day everyone shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which your hands have sinfully made for you.” (Isaiah 31:1, 6–7)

This call to turn away from our idols and worship the One True God, comes to us from Isaiah 31. God’s people have always been tempted to adopt the idols of the unbelievers around them. Idols always promise what they can never deliver: comfort, peace, security, and every personal desire fulfilled. So, God warns us to flee those idols, whether they be work, someone’s approval, sex, the socials or FOMO… and find our life in Him. Why rely on these “horses and chariots” when you can rely on the Creator? To do this now, we need His help and grace.

Psalm 95:6–7

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.” (Psalm 95:6–7)

This call to Worship God, our Great Shepherd, comes from Psalm 95. And as faithful sheep, we love to come to the sound of His voice. As we do, we come to Him singing praises for all he has done and will do for His people.

Psalm 66:1–9

I will call us to worship God today from Psalm 66. In this particular call, there is something for you to say in response, so please read along as I begin, then respond at the part marked, Congregation:

Leader

“Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God,”

Congregation

“‘How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.’”

Leader

“Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There did we rejoice in him, who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations— let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip.” (Psalm 66:1–9)

The God of our salvation is calling on us to bless Him. Let’s ask for His help to do this very thing.

Matthew 11:28–30

Matthew 11:28–30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” This call to worship God by coming to Him not a call to laziness. The rest Jesus promises is a giving up on doing good things to save your soul. But that faith always results in good works. We rest from our labours in order to put on the yoke of the Lord. Even though His burden is light, it must still be carried.

And part of our labour for the Lord in this life is properly worshiping Him in the ways He has told us to do so. But that is a task none of us can do without His help. Let's call on Him to send that help and make this morning all about Him. not a call to laziness, but resting in God for salvation

Psalm 96:1–5

“Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens.” (Psalm 96:1–5)

This call to worship the one true God, the Creator of all things, comes to all of us from Psalm 96. Every other so-called god is a worthless idol. So, turn from your foolish ways and come worship the great and glorious King!

Psalm 46:8–10

“Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. ‘Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!’” (Psalm 46:8–10)

[pause without saying anything for 30 seconds or so] The greatness of God can be muted by the busyness of mankind. But when we stop and consider, we remember that we have a Creator who has done great things, and deserves all our praise. What greater thing has He done than sending His own Son to save us from our sin and guilt?

Psalm 96:1–4

“Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.” (Psalm 96:1–4)

This call to worship God comes from Psalm 96. Here the Lord calls on His people to praise Him for the great salvation He has accomplished on their behalf. Let's do this now by singing to one another of the grace that undergirds all of His saving work. After we sing Amazing Grace, we will sing a hymn that helps us remember what it cost the Lord to save us.

Psalm 62:1–2, 5–6

“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” (Psalm 62:1–2, 5–6)

This call to worship God comes from Psalm 62. In it, the Psalmist instructs his soul to wait in silence for God. Let’s take a moment to do this, quite literally. Let’s stand in silence before God and physically express our desire to wait on the Eternal God to come and attend to our worship today.

Psalm 66

“Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.’” (Psalm 66)

This call to worship God comes from Psalm 66. In it we are told to say something to God. Did you catch what that is? We are to tell God that his deeds – that the things he has done – are awesome. We're actually to glory in – to revel in – His awesome works. The psalm then continues to talk about God's mighty work in making a way for his people through the Red Sea. But today, we praise God for his mighty work in making a way for us through Christ. So let's obey this call and praise God for his awesome works together in our first song, "To God be the Glory".

Psalm 47:1–2, 5–7

“Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth.”

“God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!” (Psalm 47:1–2, 5–7)

This call to worship God in song comes from Psalm 47.
Loud shouts require effort.
Claps require humilty.
Singing praise requires the mind.
How can we do all of this unhypocritically and with our whole heart? We will need His help. So, let's pray to Him and ask for it.

Psalm 95:1, 3, 7

Psalm 95:1, 3, 7b-11
1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
3 For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
9 when your fathers put me to the test
and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.
10 For forty years I loathed that generation
and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,
and they have not known my ways.”
11 Therefore I swore in my wrath,
“They shall not enter my rest.”

This call to worship God, the rock of our salvation, comes from Psalm 95. And as we see, we are NOT to respond to him with UNBELIEF that leads to REBELLION – but rather with FAITH that leads to PRAISE. But we sinners need God's help to do this, and God's help is what we ask for in our first song, "Come Thou Fount".

Psalm 24:7–10

“Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory!” (Psalm 24:7–10)

This call to worship God comes from Psalm 24. It is an unusual one, where the people of God are pictured as calling out to the city gates to open up in order to let the King enter. In one sense, the Lord Jesus has opened those gates for all to enter by His own atoning death and resurrection. And so we join His procession and say, Lead on, O King Eternal!

“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.”

“Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!” (Psalm 33:1–12)

This call to Worship God comes from Psalm 133.

This Psalm tells us some vital things about the Lord.
– He made all that is.
– He created it all by the power of His own voice.

And because of this, we should all
– Praise, thank and sing to Him.
– And stand in awe of Him.

Let’s sing His praise, and in the process, remind ourselves of His total sovereignty over all He has made.

Matthew 21:9

“And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’” (Matthew 21:9)

What the crowds shouted at Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, we echo in our corporate worship of God today. Hosanna — a word that literally meant, "Save us!" came to be almost a political statement. It was something you would shout toward a leader. Used here, it is an expression of praise to God for sending the Messiah. The King who would deliver Israel. Those crowds spoke better than they knew. While most would have been looking for a mere political rescue, Jesus came to save them from their sins. Let's sing to one another of the greatness of our Saviour.
