Call to Worship
“Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. ‘Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!’” (Psalm 46:8–10)
[pause without saying anything for 30 seconds or so] The greatness of God can be muted by the busyness of mankind. But when we stop and consider, we remember that we have a Creator who has done great things, and deserves all our praise. What greater thing has He done than sending His own Son to save us from our sin and guilt?

The Lord has done great things for us in sending Christ to save us from our sins and solve our biggest problem. The Lord has done great things for us in sending Christ to save us from our sins and solve our biggest problem. What Jesus would do eternally, God has done many times temporally. Let's use the words of celebration in Psalm 124 to reflect on God's gracious deliverance of us, His people!I will read the parts marked, Leader. You read out loud the parts marked, Congregation.
“Leader: If it had not been the LORD who was on our side— let Israel now say— Congregation: if it had not been the LORD who was on our side when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us; then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us would have gone the raging waters. Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth! We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped! Leader: Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 124:1–8)

Confession of Sin
At the end our service today, we will be eating and drinking the Lord's Supper together. The Bible is very clear that this meal is only for Christians, but sometimes Christians feel unworthy to participate in that meal due to their sins.
While I appreciate that sensitivity to sin, I think it is important to say that the solution to your sinful state is never to skip the meal! It is to repent and confess your sins and come to the table that welcomes sinful saints.
If you wait until you think you are worthy, you will never come. In fact, your staying back is quite proud and arrogant… because at its root is the thought that you can clean yourself up. You cannot. But you can always confess your sins.
So, I am going to give you a few moments to do that now. All of us have things we regret, and so all of us will take the time to confess those things and ask for His forgiveness. Believe this promise as you pray:“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

Assurance of Pardon
Not only is God quick to forgive our sins when we ask, He promises that a day is coming when we will need not to ask anymore.
“In those days and in that time, declares the LORD, iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none, and sin in Judah, and none shall be found, for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.” (Jeremiah 50:20)
Brothers and Sisters, since your only hope in this life and the next is the Lord Jesus, be assured He has heard your honest request for forgiveness and gladly given it. Let's sing to our King.

Catechism & Confession of Faith
Our catechism question this week highlights something very important… whether or not good works matter at all. I will read the question and answer, so you can see the logic. Then I will read the question again, and you read out loud the answer to me.
Question 34
Q: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through Christ alone, must we still do good works and obey God’s Word?A: Yes, so that our lives may show love and gratitude to God; and so that by our godly behaviour others may be won to Christ.
